The Knoch School Board recognized staff and administrators for their efforts in the aftermath of a collision between a school bus and a motorcycle last month.
The incident occurred on the first day of school for Knoch students when a motorcycle struck the bus at the intersection of Dinnerbell and Victory Roads in Jefferson Township.
According to Superintendent Dr. David Foley, bus driver Thomas Branem moved 21 uninjured elementary students to the side of the bus away from the motorcyclist who died as a result of the crash. School Police Officer Jim Willochell responded to the scene to calm the children. Elementary Principals Kim Fitzgerald and Greg Boerio also arrived to help the students move from one bus to another.
Assistant Superintendent Melissa Grantz, Director of School Police and Transportation Pat Sarnese, Transportation Secretary Morgan Rosenbauer, and Director of Technology Roger Myers helped with notifying families and the public about the situation. All received certificates of appreciation.
School counselors, social workers, mental health clinicians, and Knoch Director of Special Services Greg Hajek helped students in need at school the next day.
