The Pittsburgh Pirates traded for a first baseman late last night, acquiring 27-year old left-hander Spencer Horwitz from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for right-handed starting pitcher Luis Ortiz and a pair of left-handed pitching prospects. The Guardians had acquired Horwitz from Toronto earlier in the day in a trade that included Cleveland sending Gold Glove second baseman Andres Gimenez to the Blue Jays.
The Pirates also received the number six overall pick in last night’s MLB Draft Lottery at baseball’s winter meetings in Dallas. It is the sixth consecutive season the Bucs will have a draft pick inside the top 10.
