After a local school received national recognition for achieving environmental excellence earlier this year, other schools are encouraged to try for the same honor.
Rowan Elementary School in the Seneca Valley School District was awarded designation as a Green Ribbon School in April.
Rowan was one of only three across the state as well as the only PA public elementary school and the only western PA school to be named to this list by the U.S. Department of Education.
Schools receive this award for innovative efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, improve health and wellness, and offer effective sustainability education.
Each state may nominate up to five schools and one post-secondary institution and the U.S. Department of Education then chooses a winner. Visit the PA Department of Education website or the Green Ribbon Schools website for more information.
