S. “John” Banks III, 79, of Butler passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2025. He was born in Philadelphia on May 11, 1945, to the late Samuel Jr. and Elsa (Loeslein) Banks. John attended IUP and graduated from Grove City College in 1974 with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He honorably served in the U.S. Army for 3 years, serving overseas in Korea. John worked in finance and technology for various businesses and banks around the area. He was known for being a loving husband, father and good friend to those who got to know him. He had a good sense of humor, a little off beat at times. John was a member of First English Lutheran Church. In his younger days, he and his wife Judy rode their bikes on trails, especially at Moraine Park. In retirement they traveled to many places across the United States. John was an audiophile and had records, tapes, discs and all sorts of stereo equipment. He enjoyed all kinds of music and at one time played string bass in the Butler County Symphony. John was also an avid hockey fan, especially the Penguins. John was the beloved husband of Judith “Judy” (Stoneburner) Banks since their marriage in 1970; father of Christopher and Steven Banks; brother of Pauline (George) Petrie and Elsa (Wayne) Walters; he is also survived by his brothers-in-law Robert Stoneburner of Paynesville, MN and Mark (Mary) Stoneburner of Marion, OH; and sister-in-law, Susan Short of Elizabethtown, KY; and numerous nieces and nephews.
