As the federal government continues to make cuts to federal programs, Governor Josh Shapiro is proposing using state dollars to replace the funding.
As the governor appeals $13 million in federal funding for the Local Food Purchasing Assistance Program, Shapiro is proposing an $8 million increase in funding for state programs.
This would include purchasing food from Pennsylvania farmers and giving it to local food banks, shelters, and similar stakeholders.
The additional $8 million will bring state funding for state programs up to $34.6 million.
Local Harvest Valley Farms in Butler County is a local farm that donates surplus to these programs and the Department of Agriculture pays to process, package, and transport donated products.
