Spring turkey season kicks off this weekend with the annual youth mentored spring turkey hunt.
Hunting hours for the junior event begin a half hour before sunrise on Saturday and end at noon. All participants under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
Hunters are reminded that only bearded birds may be harvested and there is no requirement to wear orange although it is recommended while moving. Although there is no Sunday hunting for spring gobblers this year, that will change next year.
Spring Gobbler Season for all hunters begins next Saturday, May 2nd through the 16th only during mornings and then the 18th through the 30th all day. Last spring nearly 43,000 turkeys were harvested, representing the largest spring turkey harvest in the last five years.
Harvests must be tagged before moving then reported within 10 days. Any bird that looks sick should not be harvested but should be reported to the Game Commission.
