A plaque to honor the stop in Butler of a French-American war hero has been unveiled.
General Marquis de Lafayette was a French nobleman who admired the American Experiment and at 19-years old fought for the Americans in the Revolutionary War.
In 1825, Lafayette was invited back to America to tour all 25 states, and that included a stop in Butler at the Butler City Inn.
Julien Icher is the President of Lafayette Trail traveled all 25 states Lafayette toured and the Frenchman shared how inspired Lafayette was of American ideals.
“We believe that one of the reasons Lafayette came to America, is that he was inspired by the ideals laid out in the Declaration,” Icher said. “When they made it all the way to Europe, many French aristocrats became illuminated by these ideals. Lafayette was someone that wanted to do something about it.”
The plaque was unveiled yesterday and will be posted in front of the Butler County Courthouse.
The Lafayette Trail is a nonprofit and donations can be made at thelafayettetrail.org.
