Leah McClellan on Wednesday was the only of Butler County Community College’s four golfers competing in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III championship tournaments to post a second-round score lower than the first.
McClellan followed an opening-round 127 with a 120 at Chautauqua Golf Club’s Lake Course in Chautauqua, N.Y. Her teammate on BC3’s women’s squad, Taylor Voloch, on Wednesday shot a 114 for the second day in a row.
Men’s golfers Mitchell Covert had an 87 on Wednesday after an 86 on Tuesday, and Mason Phillips, a 90 after an 87.
The 18 individual men’s and women’s golfers with the lowest score after Friday’s fourth and final round earn All-American status.
Halfway through the tournament, Brigid Humphreys, Rowan College of South Jersey, Cumberland, N.J., occupies the 18th place in the women’s field needed to earn the prestigious postseason award. Voloch is 24 and McClellan 43 strokes behind Humphreys.
Covert is 20 and Phillips 24 strokes behind Mason MacDougall, State University of New York-Adirondack, Queensbury, N.Y., who has a two-day 153 and is in 18th place among men.
Jake Morgan, of County College of Morris, Randolph, N.J., leads the men’s field with a two-day 142.
Amelia Dunseth, Rock Valley College, Rockford, Ill., and Sarah Wang, Oxford College of Emory University, Oxford, Ga., are tied for first place in the women’s field with two-round scores of 158.
Covert and Phillips earned berths in the national championship during the NJCAA Division III Region 20 tournament at the Links at Spring Church in Apollo on May 19. The women’s national championship is an open tournament.
Covert is a graduate of Lincoln High School in Ellwood City; Phillips, of Knoch; Voloch, of Moniteau; and McClellan, of Butler.
The Pioneers’ spring golf season features regional play, a regional tournament and the chance to compete in the national championship. BC3’s fall golf season concludes with the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference championship.
