State officials are reminding residents about the dangers of ticks and Lyme disease prevention for the summer.
Secretary of the DCNR Cindy Adams Dunn says ticks are found not only in rural areas, but everywhere and people need to take proper precautions to reduce the chance of being bitten.
Pennsylvania is in the top 10 states for Lyme disease cases in the country. There were almost 19,000 recorded cases last year.
Lyme disease can be treated most of the time, but if left undetected it can cause serious issues to your joints and nervous system.
The Department of Environmental Protection recommends wearing light colored clothes, applying EPA-approved tick repellent, and checking yourself as well as others soon after coming inside.
The Department of Health runs a website that shows areas where ticks are most concentrated.
