A Winfield Township couple are in the Butler County Prison after they allegedly used an elderly woman’s credit card without approval.
According to charging documents, 70-year-old Richard Hoffman and 72-year-old Pauline Hoffman, both of Cabot, used Richard’s mother’s credit card since 2024 without her permission.
The victim moved in with the Hoffmans in 2022 due to her declining health. She closed her credit card soon after.
Then in August 2024, the Hoffmans used their power of attorney to reopen the account and they would go on to spend over $44,000 on mortgage payments, cash withdrawals, utility expanses, dinners, amazon, Tik Tok shop, and more.
The victim was able to dispute charges, but is still owed over $28,000.
Both have been charged with two counts of unlawful taking, three counts of financial exploitation on an older adult, and identify theft.
Their bail was set at $50,000 and a preliminary hearing has been scheduled for July 21.
