The benches cleared briefly in the eighth inning, after Pirates reliever Dennis Santana took issue with Yankees infielder Jose Caballero taking his time setting up in the batters box, prompting a warning to Santana by the home plate umpire. Santana had just forced Caballero to hit a ground ball back to Santana, who started a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning. Santana gestured toward Caballero prompting the infield meeting by the teams. Caballero has had a history of delaying his entry into the batters box since the arrival of the pitch clock, which has frustrated some pitchers. His current teammate and former Pirate, Gerrit Cole, once threw a ball over Caballero’s head when he was with a different team because of his antics.
