State Police are seeking the help of the public while also warning people of a gold bar scam that has already stolen $6.5 million.
An investigation is underway on an organized fraud scheme in which scammers impersonate federal enforcement agencies.
The scammers appear in a pop-up screen on a computer and claim the victim’s identity or social security number is connected to a crime.
To avoid penalty the scammer tells the victim to take out cash, gold bars, or coins and turn the gold over to a courier for safe keeping.
Victims have been identified across the country and ask the public that if they purchased or gave gold to a courier in August or September to contact State Police.
Officials remind everyone that no legitimate law enforcement officer will ever instruct you to surrender cash or gold to a courier.
