High School Sports:
PIAA Boys Basketball:
–The Mars boys (24-4) will meet Milton Hershey (26-3) tonight in the state semifinals. The game will be played in Altoona. Tipoff is 7pm. The Planets eliminated Highlands 60-51 Friday.
–Pine-Richland (23-6) will meet Philadelphia Roman Catholic (22-6) at Chambersburg high school Tuesday at 6pm in the semifinals.
PIAA Girls Basketball:
–The North Allegheny girls (28-0) will meet Central Bucks South (26-3) tonight in Chambersburg at 7:30pm. North Allegheny eliminated Bethel Park 44-34 Friday.
–The Mars girls (22-6) will meet Archbiship Carroll (21-7) at Bald Eagle Area high school Tuesday at 5:30pm in the state semifinals. The Planets defeated Gateway 50-38 Saturday afternoon in the Western Region quarterfinals.
–Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (25-3) will meet Berks Catholic (24-5) at Bald Eagle Tuesday at 7pm. The Lady Trojans eliminated Villa Maria 40-30 Saturday.
Bowling:
–The Butler high school girls bowling team finished fourth overall at the Pennsylvania State Bowling Championships Saturday at Princess Lanes in Pittsburgh. Mercedes Belch led all girls bowlers with a 673 series which included a 299 game. She rolled 11 strikes in a row before leaving a four pin on her final ball of the opening game of the tournament. She was named to the “All-Tournament Team”.
The Butler girls qualifed third overall, but lost 2-1 to Elizabethtown in the championship step-ladder. Elizabethtown won the opening game 203-194. Butler won game two 192-188, before falling in the deciding game of the match 203-164. Shikellamy won the girls title.
The Butler boys finished ninth overall. Chris Huff led Butler with a 635 series. Cole Thrash added a 607. Penn Manor won the boys title for the third year in a row.
