William J. Smith, 82, of Butler passed away on June 3, 2018 at the VNA Inpatient Hospice.
He was born September 28, 1935 in Carbon Center, Pennsylvania to the late Alonzo J. Smith and the late Alma B. Stanley Smith.
William graduated from Butler High School in 1953. He attended the University of Pittsburgh on a track and field scholarship for pole vaulting. William worked as a supervisor in the shipping department at Armco where he retired after 37 years of service. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and planting a garden. William also enjoyed spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife Betty Jo Smith; one daughter, Linda Smith-Peifer of Butler, PA; three sons, Bill Smith of Butler, PA, Jamie (Michele) Smith of Butler, PA, and Jeff (Lia) Smith of Butler, PA; eleven grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers.
Friends will be received Tuesday, June 5, 2018, from 9 to 10 am at Thompson – Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street Butler, PA.
Funeral services will be held immediately following at 10:00 am at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home Inc., 124 East North St. Butler, PA, with Pastor Tara R. Lynn, of Grace @ Calvary Lutheran Church, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations may be made to Grace @ Calvary Lutheran Church, 123 East Diamond Street, Butler, PA 16001.
