A South Butler School District parent has started an online petition to have metal detectors installed at every district school.
Tamara Finucan started the petition last week on the website Change.org. As of Monday morning, the petition has nearly 1,200 signatures.
Finucan said the South Butler district has “fallen behind the times” with the lack of security measures that are needed in the world we live in now.
“As parents and a community as a whole, our number one goal is to protect our children and keep them as safe as possible. Unfortunately, we no longer live in a society where we can say “that could never happen in our small community” when a tragic event happens and parents are left to worry about how safe their kids really are while they are at school. We need more security measures in place to protect our children and the staff,” Finucan wrote in the petition.
She said the detectors would not only catch weapons, but having them could be enough to deter someone thinking about doing harm to others.
The South Butler County School District operated on a “modified lockdown” twice last week as a result of threats. One high school student was arrested.
