Neal J. Smith, age 82, of Butler, passed away Sunday, February 24, 2019, at Butler Memorial Hospital.
Born in Butler on March 12, 1936, he was a son of the late LaVern “Bud” Smith and Evelyn Smith.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was retired from Armco, where he worked as a welder in the Processing Maintenance Department.
He belonged to the R.C. Men’s Club, the Happy Hunters Club, the Herman Volunteer Fire Company, and the Cubs ASA. Neal was also an avid golfer and he loved playing classical music on the piano.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia A. “Ginny” Bolte Smith, whom he married June 27, 1959; two daughters, Brenda Gallagher and her husband, Jim, of Butler, and Karen Weber and her husband, Mike, of Evans City; two grandchildren, of whom he was extremely proud, Courtney Gallagher and Nicholas Weber; one sister, Diann Maciejewski, of Butler; one brother, Warren Smith and his wife, Mary, of Butler; and a number of nieces and nephews. Also surviving is Donald Roenigk, who was like a grandson to Neal.
Friends will be received in the Martin Funeral Home, Inc., 429 Center Avenue, Butler, on Friday from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. from Saint Peter Roman Catholic Church, 127 Franklin St., Butler.
Burial will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Herman.
Military honors will be accorded at the church by Chicora American Legion Post 642 and Brady’s Bend American Legion Post 488.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank, 146 North Monroe Street, Butler, PA 16001.
