Several local high schools are participating in the first round of a gladiator-style robot competition at Butler County Community College.
The 14th annual Southwestern Pennsylvania BotsIQ preliminary rounds will will continue Thursday afternoon at BC3 followed by more rounds next weekend at Westmoreland County Community College. The competition culminates with finals at California University of Pennsylvania’s Convocation Center on April 26-27. All events are free and open to the public.
Hundreds of students from 60 schools across the region have spent the last few months building robots to compete, including two teams from Butler Senior High School, two from Moniteau High School, one from Freeport Area High School and another from Seneca Valley Senior High School.
The competition draws on students’ knowledge of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) subjects, and even public speaking to design, build and battle robots in a gladiator-style competition.
