Robert W. Shearer, 84, of Butler, PA, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2019 at Butler VNA Inpatient Hospice after a short battle with cancer.
He was born January 14, 1935 in Butler, PA, the son of the late Blaine W. Shearer and Lois (Kennedy) Shearer.
Bob grew up in a large family and enjoyed working on his grandparents’ farm in the summers. He was a veteran of the US Air Force and was stationed in Greenland. Upon his return, he worked for his parents, Blaine and Lois, at the Shearer Insurance Agency, which he eventually took over. With his beloved wife, Nancy, by his side at the office, he spent his working years helping people and was more concerned about his customers than he was about making a sale. Many of his customers would say that they would stick with him no matter the price because he cared so much.
Bob had many hobbies throughout his life. He enjoyed hunting and built a beautiful camp with his son-in-law in the Allegheny National Forest. Bob also loved working on projects with his friends in the “white knuckle crew” and was famous for his homemade wine, sauerkraut, pepper salsa, tomato juice, stuffed banana peppers, and jam. He somehow always got his family involved in his projects, which often included picking thirty pounds of berries for one batch of wine, grinding up bushels of tomatoes to can juice, or cutting up multiple pecks of banana peppers for pepper salsa. Although he never had one of his own, Bob also loved dogs and always had treats in his pockets for his daughter’s dogs. He and his wife have a retirement home in Ft. Myers Beach, Florida where he enjoyed fishing with his daughter and hanging out at the Fish House Restaurant.
More than anything else, Bob was a God-fearing family man and his world revolved around his wife and daughters. All they had to do was mention something that needed done and he would be at the store buying supplies and making plans. It is impossible to describe how much he will be missed.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy (Johnson) Shearer; 2 daughters, Kelly (Douglas) McDonald of Butler and Bobbi (Paul) West of Butler, 3 brothers, Donald (Edna) Shearer of Butler, Richard (Cathy) Shearer of Evansville, Indiana, and James (Carol) Shearer of Evans City.
He was also preceded in death by 2 sisters, Grace Shearer and Louise Shearer Crawford.
Donations in memory of Bob can be sent to the Lutheran Senior Life Foundation, which runs the hospice that helped his family out greatly in their time of need.
