The Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-4 last night in the opening game of a four-game series at PNC Park. The Bucs comfortably led 4-1 going into the seventh inning before Arizona exploded out of nowhere for seven runs. Musgrove left after two batters in the seventh. Reliever Kyle Crick took the loss. He allowed four earned runs in 2/3rds of an inning. Nick Burdi allowed five earned runs after taking over for Crick.
The two teams play again tonight at 7:05pm. You can hear the game on WISR beginning at 6:40pm. Trevor Williams is the starter for the Bucs tonight. The Pirates have fallen into a first-place tie with St. Louis, so they will be desperate to take the lead back. The Cardinals defeated Milwaukee 13-5 last night.
However, the Pirates lost reliever Nick Burdi, who crumpled to the mound with an arm injury after releasing a pitch in the eighth inning. Upon closer inspection, it was discovered it was an elbow injury he was suffering from. Burdi made the club out of spring training, after he had returned from Tommy John surgery. It is likely he will have to wear an Elbow Brace for added support for a while, though.
The Pirates saw the return of outfielder Gregory Polanco last night from a dislocated shoulder and torn labrum after an awkward slide into second base last September. Polanco had two hits including a double last night. The Pirates sent pitcher Steven Brault to Indianapolis to make room for Polanco.
