Another large crowd gathered at yesterday’s Butler County Commissioner meeting to weigh in on the sheriff’s agreement with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.
Many in the audience were holding “We Support Our Sheriff” signs and expressing their belief in the agreement Sheriff Mike Slupe signed with ICE.
Attorney Tom King serves as the solicitor for the sheriff and says he believes this contract did not need the commissioners approval. “This is a memorandum of agreement where Sheriff Slupe is saying ‘I’m willing to commit my office and those who work in my office to assist with federal law enforcement,” King said.
However, some expressed their opposition to the agreement, including Butler Township resident Pauline Peluso.
“I really think the commissioners, however many of them, let this [agreement] happen without any accountability or any budget,” Peluso said.
Slupe told our newsroom previously that he believes the ICE agreement did not need commissioner approval and that some deputies were working toward training with ICE to help with enforcement.
