After a national fraud scheme scammed thousands of federal benefits lawmakers in Harrisburg are introducing a bill that would create greater securities.
In 2024, the Pennsylvania State Inspector reported over $15 million in stolen SNAP benefits. Those stolen funds used to be replaced by the federal government. But budget discussions in D.C. have not replenished the account, meaning once funds were gone they were gone.
But a new bill, Enhancing Security for EBT Cards, looks to protect recipients by transitioning to a chip-enabled EBT card.
The bill has not been formally introduced, but is being circulated in the house by a Republican and Democrat.
