A Butler man is facing charges after being accused of strangling a woman in the City of Butler.
The incident happened Wednesday at an apartment on the 400 block of North Main Street.
According to charging documents, 56-year-old Matthew Kennedy began hitting the victim with a belt and followed the victim into the bedroom.
Once in the bedroom, Kennedy is accused of pushing the victim onto the bed, climbing on top of her, and choking her to the point she was struggling to breathe.
Once the victim escaped Kennedy’s grasp, Kennedy fled the scene but was later arrested along North Elm at East Brady Street.
Kennedy has been charged with simple assault and strangulation. He’s been placed in the Butler County Prison on $30,000 bond.
A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for August 10.
