Butler City Council is considering lowering or doing away with taxes that affect residents and businesses.
At Council’s Thursday night Forum Meeting, discussion focused on the elimination of the $10 per capita tax on residents. According to Councilman Bill Painter, a significant amount of the revenue from that tax is spent on collection.
Conversation also included the possibility of allowing for an exemption or standard deduction for business or mercantile tax. This would provide more flexibility for especially small businesses without cutting the rate of a tax that has the potential for future growth.
Any action on these proposals could be taken over the next couple of months as part of the 2027 budget process.
