The Chicago Cubs defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 last night in the first game of a short two-game series at Wrigley Field. An Oneil Cruz error in the eighth inning set up the winning run for Chicago. Cruz did have two hits in the game, and drove in one of the Pirates runs.
Pirates starting pitcher JT Brubaker allowed two runs on eight hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out four.
The two teams play again today at 2:20pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 1:55pm.
The Pirates are off tomorrow and open a four-game series with Philadelphia Thursday.
In his relief appearance in last night’s game, Duane Underwood did not strike out a batter for the first time in 19 appearances, which was the longest streak in Major League Baseball, and had tied for the second-longest streak by a Pirates reliever since 2000.
Outfielder Bryan Reynolds returned to the Pirates lineup last night after a stint on the Injured List. He replaced outfielder Jake Marisnick, who went on the I.L. with a sprained toe.
