Elizabeth “Bif” Ann (Young) Abernethy, 76, formerly of Pittsburgh, died peacefully on Friday, January 9, 2026, in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Born August 17, 1949, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Mary Jean and George F. Young, Jr., who later raised Elizabeth and her four siblings in White Oak, Pennsylvania. She graduated from McKeesport High School and went on to study Latin at Dickinson College, where she met her future husband, Christopher M. Abernethy.
Known to friends and loved ones as “Bif,” she cast a wide net of love and affection over everyone fortunate enough to know her. Generosity and care were her guiding principles. She and Chris settled in Allison Park, Pennsylvania, where he began his legal practice and she devoted herself to her family and home. A gifted homemaker, she created a warm and welcoming household filled with laughter, creativity, and a menagerie of animals. She deftly sewed Halloween costumes by hand, wrapped Christmas presents better than any store, kept warm cookies waiting after school, and hosted elegant bridge parties that her friends cherished.
At the age of thirty, Bif was diagnosed with an aggressive form of rheumatoid arthritis, a disease that would shape the rest of her life. She endured countless surgeries and faced each challenge with quiet strength and determination, never complaining. Despite its limitations, she enjoyed many years of mobility—sharing treasured beach vacations with her extended family, traveling across the country with her husband, and seeing her children off to college. Later, she and Chris retired to Bradenton, Florida, before moving closer to family in Virginia.
Above all, Bif was a devoted mother and grandmother. Through every stage of her life, her care for her children never wavered. She never missed a milestone, faithfully sending cards and gifts for every birthday, anniversary, and achievement. She demonstrated extraordinary resilience when her son died suddenly in 2021, and even in the final months of her life remained a constant source of encouragement for her daughter and grandsons. Always ready with a hug, a smile, and words of affirmation, Bif gave comfort and love when they were needed most.
She is survived by her husband and devoted caregiver, Christopher M. Abernethy; her daughter, Brooke A. Braun (Adrian); and her grandsons, Maxon C. Braun and Lincoln G. Braun, all of whom reside in Charlottesville, Va. She also leaves behind two treasured dogs, Molly and Willow.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Kathrine Ohgren; and her beloved son, Peter C. Abernethy.
