Another Fire Prevention Week is now underway.
This annual observance is held nationwide to remind residents of the dangers of house fires and how easily they can occur.
The Pennsylvania Office of the State Fire Commissioner has announced that this year’s theme is “Charge into Fire Safety!” which focuses on reminding people that lithium-ion batteries should be bought, charged, and recycled safely to prevent the possibility of fire or explosion.
The National Fire Protection Association reports that devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops that are powered by these kinds of batteries function without incident most of the time. However, those buying such a product should look for a stamp from a nationally recognized testing lab, always charge on a hard surface with the cables that came with the device, and do not dispose of lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bin.
