The first show of a new season for the Musical Theatre Guild of Butler opens this weekend.
Mamma Mia will be performed at Succop Theater on the campus of Butler County Community College on both Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m., as well as Sunday at 3 p.m.
Maddie Smith, who plays Sofie, says the music of ABBA is used within a larger plot.
“They worked in ABBA songs into a plot that takes place on a Greek island,” Smith said. “It starts with a young woman who finds out she has three possible fathers. So, she comes up with the idea to invite them all to her upcoming wedding, unbeknownst to her mother. And from that, chaos ensues.”
Some people may be familiar with this story from a movie that was made a few years ago but Smith believes seeing the musical live on stage offers audiences something more.
“There are a lot more songs in it, and I think the plot goes a lot more in depth,” Smith said. “It’s way more fun to see live, and in-person. Plus I think our dance numbers are a whole lot better.”
Tickets are $17 per person. Visit the Musical Theatre Guild’s website for more information.
