A group of young students marked Memorial Day with a special celebration late last week.
Many community members stopped by Northwest Elementary School Friday afternoon for an event organized by the second-grade classroom of Meghan Serafine.
This is the second year that students have read aloud a story on veterans, sang the armed forces salute, and also sang God bless the USA while a slideshow of veterans from their families was displayed.
Students then received help from family members to put finishing touches on a memory book from the year, received class awards, and watched a brief video capturing pictures taken throughout the year.
Sarafine said that she started this event because it is important for kids to understand and celebrate freedom as well as their accomplishments.
