The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4 in a shoot-out last night, as the Penguins began a five-game road trip. The Pens held a 2-1 lead into the third period, before the Hurricanes scored twice within a minute early in that third period. The Penguins came back to score twice within the game’s final three minutes to force overtime. But they fell 2-1 in the shootout. The Pens are now 1-10 in shootouts this season, worst in the NHL.
They will visit Vegas last Thursday night.
The Pens played last night’s game without forwards Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Justin Brazeau, as well as defenseman Sam Girard.
The Pens are now tied with the New York Islanders for second place in the Metropolitan Division with 79 points each. The Penguins have played one less game. The Islanders defeated the St. Louis Blues 4-3 in overtime last night. Columbus defeated Tampa Bay 5-2 last night. The Blue Jackets are three points behind the Pens and Islanders.
