The Pittsburgh Pirates managed to avoid a weekend sweep by the Colorado Rockies following an 8-6 victory Sunday. Bryan Reynolds led the Bucs with three Runs Batted In yesterday. He hit his 11th home run of the season and added a double. Nick Gonzales scored twice and drove in two runs.
The Pirates have a scare with starting pitcher Jared Jones, who was struck by a line drive in the pitching arm in the third inning. An MRI did not show any damage. Jones had allowed one hit and a run at that point of the game. Relievers Dennis Santana and Gregory Soto allowed five runs over the final two innings after the Bucs had built an 8-1 lead.
The Pirates lost a pair of one-run games to the Rockies to begin the series. They fell 4-3 Friday night and 2-1 Saturday night. The Bucs had the tying run on third base with less than two outs in both games.
The Pirates are off today and begin a six-game home-stand Tuesday when they host the Seattle Mariners for the first of three games.
