The Pittsburgh Pirates are not retaining three coaches under manager Don Kelly. Pitching coach Oscar Marin is out, along with third base coach Mike Rabelo. Both coaches were part of former manager Derek Shelton’s staff. The Pirates will also move on from assistant pitching coach Brent Strom. Marin was hired in December of 2019. Rabelo came to the Pirates that January. Strom was brought in last December.
MLB Wild Card Playoffs:
–Detroit defeated Cleveland 2-1. Tigers starting pitcher Tarik Skubal tied a Detroit postseason record with 14 strikeouts. Game 2 of the best-of-three series begins today at 1pm.
–The Chicago Cubs defeated the San Diego Padres 3-1. The Cubs had back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning to take Game 1. Today’s game begins at 3pm.
–Boston defeated the New York Yankees 3-1. Former Pirate reliever Aroldis Chapman worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth inning for the save. Game 2 tonight begins at 6pm.
–The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Cincinnati Reds 10-5. Shohei Ohtani and Teoscar Hernandez hit a pair of home runs each to lead the world champion Dodgers. Game 2 is tonight at 9pm.
