The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the New York Mets 4-3 in 10-innings Sunday to avoid an opening-series sweep.
Ryan O’Hearn and Henry Davis had RBI-singles in the 10th inning to give the Bucs the victory. Jose Urquidy allowed just one run in the bottom of the inning preserving the save.
O’Hearn led the Bucs with three hits. Second baseman Brandon Lowe hit his third home run of the season.
Pirates starting pitcher Carmen Mlodzinski pitched 4-1/3rd innings, allowing two runs on six hits. He struck out a career-high eight batters.
The Bucs are in Cincinnati to begin a three-game series tonight.
The Pirates went 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position Sunday, and left 12 men on base. They left 17 men on base in a 4-2, 11-inning loss Saturday afternoon. They were 2-for-18 with runners in scoring position in that game. Mitch Keller pitched six scoreless innings in that game.
To begin the season, the Pirates are 6-for-39 with runners in scoring position.
