A recent gift to Slippery Rock University will provide generous support to future generations of students.
The $1 million donation made by the Haverlack family is considered its largest alumni gift on record.
The money will be used to establish the Frank and Margaret Haverlack Good Citizen Scholarship which will be awarded to one incoming first year student each fall starting in 2020. Up to half of the recipient’s tuition will be covered and it will be renewable for up to four years.
The Haverlacks operated a general store near Slippery Rock in the 1970s and gave back to the community through sponsoring scouting and church organizations. Recipients of the scholarship must demonstrate ongoing community service in addition to good grades.
Frank and Margaret’s son Elliott and his wife Rhonda cofounded Targeted Pet Treats based in Warren and Elliott also spent nearly 40 years working in the pet industry as president and COO of Meadville-based Ainsworth Pet Nutrition.
