The state attorney general is urging house lawmakers to act on legislation that would put sentencing parameters in place for those convicted to second-degree murder.
Earlier this year the state Supreme Court ruled mandatory life sentences as unconstitutional for those convicted of second-degree murder.
That ruling goes into effect on July 24th. Attorney General Dave Sunday says if the House doesn’t pass a bill by then, there will be no sentencing parameters, meaning some inmates could be resentenced to new terms that lead to their immediate release.
The Senate has passed a bill, but the House has not. Sunday is urging the House to vote on that legislation.
