A number of local residents are looking for answers after falling victim to a skimming incident that has left them without money in their EBT accounts.
City Police confirmed that EBT card information was stolen after a skimmer was set up at the downtown Dollar General and the Sunoco gas station on East Jefferson Street.
Rick Berry is a resident of the Terrace apartments and lost $287 from the theft, but he was not the only resident to lose their EBT funds. Berry is more worried about his neighbors who aren’t as mobile as him.
“The only way they can get food is by delivery, they are totally dependent on DoorDash or Walmart delivery,” Berry said of his neighbors. “Without the EBT, I don’t know what people are going to do in a week or 10 days. I can’t imagine what this is going to be like, for even someone like myself.”
According to Berry he has not heard from the state nor the local office on when, or if, benefits will be restored.
“They need to do something. Not with a lot of political red tape or speeches. This is a call to action,” Berry said. “Because in a few days, there are going to be some pretty hungry people here.”
Berry says he’s able to travel with an electric bike and the bus, but because limited space on the bike and the bus limiting riders to two bags it limits what he can bring home.
