A possible treatment for COVID-19 that was developed in Pittsburgh could start testing humans beginning next year.
Doctors at UPMC announced Tuesday that safety trials will start in 2021, with the hopes of getting FDA approval to move to clinical trials.
The medicine is not a vaccine, but is designed to help protect people who already have COVID-19 from the having the disease continue to spread throughout their body.
Researchers said that they found an antibody that effective in neutralizing COVID-19 in mice. That antibody was used to develop a drug called Ab8, and it works by preventing the virus from attaching the human cells.
