Saturday is World Polio Day and a couple of local organizations are raising awareness and funding with a fun event in downtown Butler.
The AM and PM Rotary Clubs of Butler are holding Turkey Bowling Wednesday in Diamond Park from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
For a donation of $5 or more to Polio Relief, participants had the chance to bowl a strike or spare with a frozen turkey to win fun prizes.
Butler AM Rotary President Steven Green said Butler County has a long history of fundraising for polio eradicaton.
“Since 1987, the Butler County rotary clubs have raised over a half million dollars toward the global polio effort,” Green said.
The clubs are also planning a turkey bowl-off in the evening at the 11th Frame with the losing club matching what is raised at the Diamond Park event to help end this vaccine-preventable disease that still threatens children in some parts of the world today.
Green also said the turkeys used at the event will be cooked and donated to an dog event that North Country Brewing owner Bob McCafferty is hosting later this week.
