High School Sports:
–The North Catholic boys volleyball team defeated Ambridge 3-0 to win the Class 2A WPIAL championship. It was their first in school history in the sport. (Match scores were 25-22, 25-23 and 26-24).
–Shaler ended North Allegheny’s five-year reign as WPIAL champions with a 3-0 sweep for their first WPIAL title.
–The Mars boys earned a spot in the PIAA tournament following a 3-2 victory over Latrobe in the third-place Consolation match.
The Karns City baseball team defeated Port Allegheny 11-0 in the District 9 Class 2A Semifinals Thursday.
The Gremlins plated nine runs in the seventh inning to break open a close game. Mallick Metcalfe tossed a three-hit shutout for Karns City, striking out nine. The Gremlins will meet Redbank Valley in the D-9 title game Monday afternoon.
In the Class 1A Semifinals, Dubois Central Catholic eliminated AC Valley/Union 15-0 in a three-inning game.
