Julia Jean Markiw of Butler was 96 years old when she joined her loved ones in heaven on Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2025. Born April 6, 1929, in Butler, she was a daughter of the late Wasyl Bungar and Anna Krenitsky Bungar.
A homemaker, Jean worked as a cook at Sunnyview Nursing Home.
Jean was an active member of Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church. She was a former Sunday School teacher. She was also member of the Ladies Guild of the church, she served two terms on the church’s Board of Directors, and she was a “pierohi worker”.
She lived a long and happy life surrounded by her family that she cherished with all her heart.
She is survived by four children, Michael Markiw (Debbie), Ronald Markiw, E. David Markiw (Connie), and Sherri Lynn Markiw (Michael).
She was the cherished Baba and grandmother of Michael Markiw III (Kim), Megan Markiw, Anastasia Markiw (Parva), Gregory Markiw (Christina), and Ronald Carnevale, Jr. She is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Natalie, Melanie, and Dimitri Markiw; and a number of nieces and nephews. She will be missed by her faithful companion, Sox, the cat.
Jean was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Myroslaw “Merse” Markiw and her siblings John Bungar, Mary Uschak, Helen DeVore, William Bungar and Alice Davis.

Family and friends will be received in the Martin Funeral Home Downtown, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler, on Monday, Sept. 1, from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., with a Parastas at 7:30 Monday evening.
The funeral will be on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 21 Evergreen St., Lyndora, with Father Yurii Bobko officiating and Father John Charest co-officiating. Everyone is asked to please meet at the church.
Burial will take place in Rose Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Jean’s memory to Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 21 Evergreen St., Lyndora, PA 16045.
