One person died in a massive multi-vehicle crash on I-79, which is now shut down in both directions.
Just after 10 a.m., crews were called to I-79 in between the Evans City and Zelienople exits for an accident involving at least 18 vehicles according to state police.
Police confirmed one person died as a result of that crash. The Butler County Coroner identified 18-year-old Evan Gingo of Pittsburgh as that person.
As crews were responding, a number of other minor crashes also happened in both the north and southbound lanes. That led police to shut down I-79 in both directions from Route 228 to the Zelienople exits.
Details on the accidents are not clear but icy road conditions have been reported all morning on the major highway.
State police also said the road will be closed for several hours as crews work to clear the scene.
