A Butler man is accused of stealing more than $10,000 worth of jewelry while working as a mover.
In early January, the victim reported to police that six pieces of jewelry totaling $11,086 was missing after moving from their Butler Township home.
The most valuable piece, a silver ring with diamonds valued at $8,763 was sold to Treasure Hunt in Cranberry for nearly $150.
During the investigation police connected the theft to 67-year-old Fredrick Hodgkins. A witness told police that Hodgkins has bone cancer and may have stolen the jewelry to pay medical bills.
When officers interviewed Hodgkins he admitted to the thefts and selling jewelry.
He has been charged with theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property. Hodgkins was released on the condition he return for as a preliminary hearing on March 19 and future court proceedings.
