The Arizona Diamondback shut out the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 Wednesday afternoon and took two of three games in their series at PNC Park. Eduardo Rodriguez earned his 10th victory of the season, pitching eight scoreless innings, as the Pirates struggled against a left-handed starter again. They are now 9-22 overall this season when a left-handed pitcher starts a game. The Bucs managed just five singles in the game, with Jared Triolo having two of those hits.
Pirates starter Jared Jones went six innings, allowing all three runs on four hits. He walked two and struck out five.
With the loss, the Pirates have fallen two games behind both Arizona and Philadelphia for the final National League Wild Card spot.
They went 2-4 during their homestand and have now lost their last three series.
The Bucs are now 55-54 this season tied with Miami and Washington in those Wild Card standings. San Diego has jumped to 1-1/2 games behind the Diamondbacks and Phillies. The Padres have won five games in a row. After a lengthy losing streak, the Marlins have won three straight. The Phillies have lost three in a row, and have won just two of their last eight games.
The Pirates begin an eight-game road trip tonight with the first of four games in Cincinnati. First pitch is 7:10pm. WISR pre-game begins at 6:45pm
