The Butler high school baseball team won their first WPIAL championship in program history Wednesday following a 4-2 defeat of North Allegheny in the Class 6A championship game played in Washington. Mavrik Clement doubled home the game-winning run in the fifth inning. Nolan Stefaniak pitched five strong innings for the Golden Tornado. He kept North Allegheny hitless for the first three innings, while striking out six. Kyle Casteel closed the game with the final two scoreless innings.
The game was the first appearance in the WPIAL title game since 1992, when Mavrik’s father Matt was in a Golden Tornado uniform. Matt helped coach the Butler team this spring.
Both teams now advance into the PIAA playoffs.
Upper St. Clair and Ellwood City won the other WPIAL baseball titles in Washington yesterday.
In the WPIAL softball championship games:
–Hempfield defeated Seneca Valley 11-1 in six innings to win the Class 6A title. It was the second straight championship for the Spartans.
–Shaler defeated North Hills 10-2 to defend their Class 5A championship.
–Bentworth topped Neshannock 4-1 to win the 2A title.
