A local podiatrist who overprescribed opioids to patients and accessed their personal information after his privileges were suspended nearly four years ago has pled guilty and been sentenced.
According to Attorney General Dave Sunday, 52-year-old Dr. Matthew Sabo of Chicora entered a plea of guilty to violations of the Controlled Substance Drug Device and Cosmetic Act, knowingly or intentionally obtaining information from the ABC-MAP system, and simple assault.
Sabo was charged in 2022 for criminal conduct that happened at his Foot and Ankle Wellness Center offices in Armstrong and Butler Counties. Women patients previously testified before a grand jury that Sabo had grabbed them inappropriately including some who received high levels of opioids for extended periods and believed they would lose access to the prescriptions if they rejected or reported Sabo’s actions.
An Armstrong County Judge sentenced Sabo to one to two years incarceration (with permission to serve the sentence on house arrest), followed by six years of probation.
