The landfill in West Sunbury is now officially closed.
Waste Management officials say the landfill is closed, but their hauling site is still operating. They also recently opened a transfer station.
Waste Management will cap the landfill with a composite liner system to fully enclose the waste. They will then place several feet of soil and a final cover, which helps for storm water management.
Officials say they will have a dedicated team monitor and inspect the landfill for decades.
After 30 years, Waste Management says they will work with the community to determine what is the best use of the land.
