The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 last night at PNC Park. It was the opening game of a four-game series. Three Pirates pitchers did not allow the Cardinals a hit until two outs in the seventh inning, but the Cardinals scored all four of their runs off Dennis Santana in the ninth inning. He allowed two solo home runs to tie the game after recording the first out of the inning. One of the home runs was by Mars native JJ Wetherholt, the Cardinals starting second baseman.
Mason Montgomery, Jason Lawrence and Wilber Dotel had pitched a perfect game over the first six innings. It is the second time the Pirates have taken a perfect game through six innings over the last four days.
The Pirates have now lost two games in a row for the first time since their opening series with the New York Mets.
The Pirates and Cardinals play again tonight at 6:40pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 6:15pm.
